Hi Everybody,
A few words on your test on Wednesday. The test will have 3 parts:
PART ONE:(50%) 5x10-question grammar+vocabulary sections (you should revise the following: all modal verbs, verb patterns (+infinitive/+ing), academic vocabulary (especially WORD FAMILIES), discourse markers (exemplification phrases, contrast phrases, cause/result phrases - all the phrases that link together sentences), and TENSES (all the tenses)
PART TWO: 25 percent will focus on your ability to read/write and synthesize (i.e. summarise) and report information from other sources (also giving references and citations). You will be given two texts with similar themes and you will have to write a short summary of 100-150 words on the texts.
PART THREE: 25 percent will focus on your ability to understand lectures and classroom interaction (you teacher will give you a 5 minute lecture, you will take notes (5 points) and then answer some questions and/or write a short paragraph summarising what you have understood).
You need to study for these using all your notes from class lectures/discussions/handouts/your booklet. You will also need to utilise weblearn and the Internet. For example, you can google "academic modal verbs" and do the exercises in the websites you found. Remember that your search on the Google should always include the word "academic". This helps narrow down the search and bring forward more relevant pages.
I will post some useful websites on my useful links feature. Make sure you do your best to get ready for this test.
